Could the way my child
breathes, eats, or speaks
be affecting their development?
At Rogers Bridge Pediatric Therapy, we’re excited to now offer myofunctional therapy—a specialized treatment that focuses on the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue to improve essential functions like breathing, swallowing, and speaking.
What is Myofunctional Therapy?
Myofunctional therapy is a neuromuscular re-education approach that targets improper oral habits and weak muscle function that can affect a child’s development. Therapy often includes exercises to retrain the tongue and facial muscles to rest, breathe, swallow, and speak in a healthier and more efficient way.
"I am especially thankful for Cristina's patience and experience with pediatric clients. My daughter progressed tremendously under her care." — Shacresa

This therapy is beneficial for children who:
-
Mouth breathing
-
Have difficulty chewing or swallowing
-
Show signs of tongue thrust or improper tongue positioning
-
Have persistent speech sound disorders that made minimal progress with traditional speech therapy
-
Experience orthodontic or dental concerns due to oral habits
-
Snoring or disturbed sleep patterns
-
Struggling with persistent thumb sucking or pacifier use
Why Does It Matter?
Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) can impact more than just speech. They may contribute to issues like poor sleep, behavioral challenges, dental misalignment, and feeding difficulties. Early intervention through myofunctional therapy can help correct these patterns and support better health, learning, and communication outcomes.
What Does Therapy Look Like?
Each child begins with a comprehensive evaluation to determine their specific needs. Therapy sessions are playful, engaging, and individualized—often including:
-
Oral motor and facial exercises
-
Breathing retraining
-
Tongue and lip posture work
-
Functional activities that support speech and feeding
-
Parent education and home programming
We work closely with families—and collaborate with orthodontists, ENTs, and other providers when needed—to ensure well-rounded care.
Is My Child a Good Candidate?
If your child:
-
Snores or mouth breathes regularly
-
Has trouble with speech sounds like /s/, /z/, /l/, /sh/, r
-
Has a history of feeding difficulties
-
Has been recommended for a tongue tie evaluation
—then myofunctional therapy may be beneficial.
